Adventures In Half Moon Bay, California

The Floral Diversity of Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay may be a destination for travelers because of its beautiful beaches and exquisite restaurants. Yet, some travelers come because of the rich, moist air and abundant plants and trees that thrive in this climate. Whether you take a leisurely walk along an ocean bluff or visit the wetlands, you are always surrounded by plants and flowers growing from every possible patch of earth. When you are ready, visit the local nurseries and be prepared to encounter the work of some of the top horticulturists in California, drawn to the area because of its mild climate and rich soil.

For many years I have been intrigued by the rich floral diversity of Half Moon Bay, but I often wanted to identify the species or common names of the plants accurately. Recently I discovered how to submit my floral photographs to apps like “PlantNet Plant Identification” and find the intricate details of the plant’s family, species, common name, and many other details.

All photos below were taken in Half Moon Bay from the ocean bluffs, plants decorating neighborhood gardens, or local outdoor nurseries.  The identification of the plants came directly from “PlantNet Plant Identification.”

Please excuse my novice approach to this science; for now, I am thrilled to start this path of discovery.
