For years I have patiently waited at sunset, watching the sun sink into the Pacific ocean, and attempted to observe the famous ‘green flash.’ Not once did the mysterious ‘green flash’ appear at the final moment of the sun’s descent.
Perhaps it was one of the most comforting moments of my life when I saw the SF Gate article “Meteorologist captures rare Green Flash in Half Moon Bay”. This was it, photographic proof that the flash exists. Not only does it exist but it was photographed in my favorite beach town in California, “Half Moon Bay.”
The article starts with a a basic exploration of the science behind the appearance of the green flash. With the help of this introduction to the Geometrical optics of flashes, I finally understood how green flashes result from large variations in astronomical refraction near the horizon. This short article also provides a guide on how to increase your chances of observing this phenomenon. So, armed with my new knowledge I am sitting on the beaches of Half Moon Bay ready to join the “Green Flash” club.
By the way, if you come to Half Moon Bay for a ‘Green Flash’ experience, stay at the Inn At Mavericks. You might as well spoil yourself during your adventure.
